How to measure yourself for a tracksuit set

Four measurements, a soft tape, and five minutes. How to get your size right the first time and avoid the return.

Buying clothing online without measuring is guessing. Five minutes with a tape saves a return, and it is the difference between a set that fits and one that sits in a drawer.

What you need

A soft tape measure. If you do not have one, a piece of string laid against a ruler afterwards works perfectly well.

Measure over thin clothing or bare skin, stand relaxed with your arms down, and breathe normally. Do not hold your breath and do not pull the tape tight. Snug and level is the target.

The four measurements

Chest. The easiest and most reliable method is not to measure yourself at all. Take a hoodie you already own and like the fit of, lay it flat, and measure straight across from armpit to armpit. That is the number most size charts, including ours, actually use.

Waist. Around your natural waistline, which is the narrowest point, usually just above the navel. Not where your jeans sit, which is generally lower.

Hip. Around the fullest part of your seat, all the way around, tape parallel to the floor.

Leg. From the top of the waistband down the outside of the leg to the hem. Easiest done on a pair of trousers you already wear rather than on yourself.

Garment measurements versus body measurements

This trips up more people than anything else. A chart quoting 52cm chest is almost never saying your chest should be 52cm around. It is usually a flat garment measurement, taken pit to pit on the laid-out piece, so the equivalent body circumference is roughly double.

Check which one a chart is giving you before you compare. If it does not say, measuring a garment you already own and comparing like for like is the safest approach.

The mistakes that cost you a size

Pulling the tape tight. Measuring over a jumper. Letting the tape drop at the back so it is not level. Measuring at the wrong point on the waist. Any one of these will move you a size.

What to do between two sizes

Go up. That is our answer for our own sets, because the cut sits closer than a lot of matching sets do, so the larger size buys comfort without losing the shape. For a heavily oversized brand the advice would be the opposite.

One size for the set

Worth knowing if you are buying a matching set: check whether the two pieces are sized to match. Ours are, so you pick one size and both pieces are cut for it. Not every brand does this, and mixing a hoodie size with a different jogger size is where a lot of matching sets stop matching.

Every measurement for all seven sizes, both pieces, is on the size guide. If you are still unsure, send us your numbers and we will tell you which size to take. All four colourways are in Drop 1.
